Stephen Quick was born in Honiton and trained in Bristol under such artists as Wayne Lloyd, Eamon O’Kean and Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller. Since leaving university he has set up the art and film studio “Splintered Studios” based in Devon.

cocaink_stephenquickHe is an internationally collected artist with collectors all around Europe and America and as far a field as Australia and Japan.

Recent projects have included the “Banana Manifesto”, used as the artwork for the stage production of  Mojo Mickeybo  at the Trafalgar Theatre on Londons West End and fitting out the whole of the new Riviera cinema in Teignmouth. His film “In the Key of Water” was used to highlight water shortage at The National Association of Landscape Architects in Bergan, Norway.

“My Manifesto” is basically an art gag; a post modern take on postmodern ideals. I take overused cultural images and give these images a new lease of life. The images chosen are ones that are so overused that we no longer look at them, we know what they are, very much in the same way we do not need to read a Coke can or a McDonalds sign to know what it is. By adding banana’s, hearts, ipods or butterflies, these images take on new meanings, re-evaluating the images of our “Time” and making the viewer re-evaluate the subjects in question. In some cases these work as a social commentary (guns replaced by bananas) or make a comment on the person or character in the painting. All reveal new contextual meanings and hope to bring a giggle or a smile to the viewer.
